Giuseppe Arcimboldo

Arcimboldo, born in 1527, was an Italian painter who created portraits made from objects such as fruit and vegetables, flowers and fish. He arranged the objects in such a way that a person's face was recognisable, so you could say he made chimeras of people and objects. I think his work was very unusual and progressive; he was ahead of his time.

a 'Geep'

A geep or sheep-goat chimera, first bred in Australia in 1978. It was produced by combining the embryos of a sheep and a goat so the animal has both cells. It's not the same as a sheep-goat hybrid where a goat mates with a sheep.

Chimera definition

Definitions of chimera include -

1. a mythological, fire-breathing monster, commonly represented with a lion's head, a goat's body, and a serpent's tail.

2. any similarly grotesque monster having disparate parts, esp. as depicted in decorative art.

 

 

3. a horrible or unreal creature of the imagination; a vain or idle fancy.

4. Genetics - an organism composed of two or more genetically distinct tissues, as an organism that is partly male and partly female, or an artificially produced individual having tissues of several species.
